I write to let you know that the Merton Cycling Campaign welcomes the government's White Paper on Integrated Transport. Particularly:

• The fact that cycling is mentioned throughout
• Its positive attitudes towards better road safety
• The retention of the previous government's targets to double cycle use by 2002, and double it again by 2012 (against a base year of 1996)
• Integration of cycling with public transport
• Commitment towards re-allocation of road space, from cars to bus and bike lanes
• Support for lower speed limits
• Priorities for cyclists at junctions
• Commitment to safe cycle routes to schools

The White Paper represents a general statement of government policy. We now expect government guidance and legislation to follow. I therefore urge you to support early legislation in order that the benefits of the new transport policy may be brought as soon as possible to cyclists and indeed to all road users throughout Merton, London, and the country.
