co-ordinator!

At the MCC 2009 Annual
Meeting, MCC members voted
in favour of electing Charles Barraball to the post of Merton Cycling Campaign Borough Co-ordinator,
after Richard Evans formailty stepped down following 16 years of loyal service.
Richard Evans formally stepped down as MCC co-ordinator at the MCC 2009 Annual Meeting in July, in one of two
changes to MCC's organsiation.
Richard Evans handed on the co-ordinator’s baton to Charles Barraball. Of
course, Richard will still be able to attend the meetings to support the group
and provide us with his 16 years of valuable experinces.
We have also changed our venues for the monthly MCC meetings! We now meet up at the All Saints
Centre in South Wimbledon. This new venue provides more spacious and accessible
accommodation, with excellent facilities including hot and cold beverages! If
you are an LCC / MCC member and
would like to get involved in our organisation, then you are very welcome to
join us at this excellent new venue.
When? Where? What time?
Merton Cycling Campaign monthly meetings are held at:
the All Saints Centre,
All Saints Road, SW19 1BX.
They still take place at 8pm on the first Thursday of
every month (except August). Cycle parking is available.
A wider cross-section of local cyclists required.
MCC meetings tend
to have a strong male bias although they are rarely attended exclusively by
men. We would like to encourage more women to come along and contribute to our
campaigning direction, so that we can be more representative of people who ride
bikes in the borough.
Please get in touch with us if there are any
particular issues which may discourage women from becoming active members or,
better still, come along to the next meeting! The greater our diversity, the
stronger our voice becomes as a local campaigning group.
Prospective Labour Party Candidate voices support for
MCC’s Martin Way campaign
The MCC news team has received the following letter
relating to the much maligned Martin Way ‘safety’ scheme.
Dear MCC,
Having read your April
/ May 2009 newsletter, I wish to register my agreement with Richard Evans'
complaints about the chicanes on Martin Way. As a cyclist myself, I think it is
important that our safety is protected when travelling around Merton –
especially as cycling is one of the greenest ways of getting around and vital
to reducing our carbon emissions.
By ignoring the safety
of cyclists in this way, Merton Council is deterring cyclists, when they should
in fact be encouraged. I whole-heartedly agree with your campaign to make
Martin Way safe for cyclists.
Yours sincerely,
Andrew Judge,
Labour Party
Prospective
Parliamentary Candidate for Wimbledon
Womble spotted on MCC rickshaw!

MCC activists
were busy promoting cycling during the 2009 Bike Week when Haydon the Womble (AFC
Wimbledon's mascot) clambered aboard the MCC rickshaw. The MCC stall was
part of the Wimbledon Village Fair on the Common.
