General comments
We would like to have seen more radical proposals, e.g. total pedestrianisation of this section of the Broadway, with cycle tracks, and all motor traffic diverted around Hartfield Road (which would revert to 2-way operation). I understand steps have been taken to safeguard the future possibility of further more radical enhancements such as this?
That said, I do believe the scheme proposed will bring improvements to conditions for cyclists, most notably by the narrowing of the carriageway and the 20mph speed limit which should slow things down and make things generally safer for cycling.
Withdrawal of cycle path outside Safeway
We are not too concerned about the proposed loss of this facility - arguably this will make matters safer, as this cycle lane is frequently parked in, forcing cyclists to swing out into the main traffic flow. A bad cycle facility (cycle campaign jargon is diffacility…) such as this has proved to be, is usually worse than no facility at all.
Withdrawal of Victoria Crescent cycle route
We are very disappointed to lose this excellent facility. Cyclists will either have to walk here, or take a dangerous and lengthy detour around the three-lane Hartfield Road gyratory system. Victoria Crescent is plenty wide enough to accommodate cyclists and pedestrians, on a pedestrian priority basis. The proposed outright ban on cycling here is likely to be flouted, leading to unnecessary conflict. We would urge re-consideration here.
Through cycle routes
We understand the scheme is designed to deflect cyclists who are not stopping in Wimbledon town centre away from the town centre area. Safe alternative routes must therefore be provided - to this end we would like to see traffic signals installed at the following LCN junctions:
I look forward to hearing from you
Yours Sincerely
