MCC vision for Wimbledon town centre

Wimbledon Town Centre has been bad news for cyclists for years - just when you most need a safe route as you approach the town centre, they all fade away. And things are getting worse: the recent building developments (new Safeway etc.) have resulted in the loss of the excellent Victoria Crescent cycle route. This means that cyclists wanting to use the Beulah Road and Dundonald Road cycle route from the station towards Raynes Park must first risk all and join the two-lane one-way racetrack system with all the buses and boy-racers that SW19 can throw at us…

MCC is calling for radical improvements to the town centre and an end to this traffic nightmare - the "OxfordStreetisation" of the Broadway between Wimbledon Bridge and Gladstone Road, open to pedestrians, cyclists and buses only.

All other motor traffic would run in both directions along what is presently the one-way north-bound system: Hartfield Road, Sir Cyril Black Way and Gladstone Road.

Simple! So simple in fact that MCC has suggested that the council could pilot the scheme for one day on European Car Free Day - 22nd September 2002.

MCC is working with LB Merton and Transport for London towards this ambitious long-term goal.
